UNITING GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES: A LOOK BACK AT THE 4TH PHARMACY GAME INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

The 4th Pharmacy Game International Symposium concluded with resounding success, marking two dynamic days of global collaboration, innovation, and educational advancement in the vibrant city of Groningen. Held on June 2–3, 2025, the event brought together pharmacy educators, students, researchers, and institutional partners from across the globe, reaffirming a collective commitment to shaping the future of pharmacy education.

This Year’s Theme: Global Pharmacy Practice

Under the theme “Global Pharmacy Practice,” this year’s symposium offered a rich platform to explore the diverse realities of pharmacy education and professional practice worldwide. Participants examined how various models are integrated into the Pharmacy Game educational framework—a simulation-based learning concept that cultivates critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world readiness among pharmacy students.

A Truly International Community

This year’s symposium welcomed representatives from an impressive lineup of partner universities, including  Leiden University, Vilnius University, University of Groningen, Faculty of Pharmacy, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, University of Oslo, University of Bath, Griffith University, Utrecht University, and the University of Nottingham. Attendees from Poland and Austria, further enriching the international perspectives shared throughout the event.

Empowering Student Voices on Sustainability

One of the most thought-provoking sessions featured a student-led debate on the pharmacist’s role in environmental sustainability. The session opened by Dr. Tanja Fens, who introduced the importance of sustainability in pharmacy and invited students to share examples of environmentally conscious practices from both community and hospital settings. Students offered real-world insights and proposed new initiatives for greener pharmacy practices.

The debate was moderated by Ms. Sama Ghozlan, Chairperson of Pharmacy Education at the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF). Students from various universities actively discussed the responsibilities and opportunities for pharmacists in addressing environmental issues, demonstrating the vision, leadership, and drive of the profession’s future leaders.

Immersive Learning in the Skills Lab Pharmacy

A key highlight of the symposium was the Skills Lab Pharmacy, where participants experienced simulated clinical scenarios designed to mirror real-life pharmacy practice. With a focus on three different patient care scenarios, attendees took on the role of patients in various simulated pharmacy settings and later evaluated the student performances, contributing directly to the students’ final scores.

Some feedback from participants included:
“What a different experience from one simulated pharmacy to another!”
“This is a very valuable learning experience—for the students and for us.”
“Students act like real professionals.”

These hands-on exercises showcased the power of simulation-based learning in enhancing clinical confidence, decision-making, and interprofessional collaboration.

Celebrating Innovation in Patient Care

Two outstanding keynote presentations highlighted innovation in pharmacy-led care and showcased nominees for the KNMP Care Innovation Award 2025:

Point-of-care FeNO Measurement in the Pharmacy – Dr. Job van Boven

Pharmacists often counsel patients without access to key clinical data. This innovation introduces a point-of-care FeNO test that measures the fraction of nitric oxide (FeNO) in exhaled air—a biomarker for airway inflammation and asthma. By using this tool to identify patients with high salbutamol use, pharmacists can offer targeted counseling and adjust care. After a six-month implementation, FeNO levels declined and most patients achieved better asthma control. This approach empowers pharmacists with practical clinical insights and significantly improves patient outcomes.

The Annual Review in a Community Pharmacy – Ellen Van Loon

“Talking about medicines—your pharmacy is the right place.” This patient-centered initiative introduces annual medication reviews led by pharmacy assistants, providing a structured opportunity to discuss medicine use, address challenges, and improve adherence. This proactive model has led to measurable health improvements, cost savings in the healthcare system, and increased recognition of pharmacy assistants as key healthcare providers. It’s a powerful reminder of the role pharmacies play in safe and effective medication use.

Looking Ahead: See You in 2026!

The Pharmacy Game community continues to grow—more connected, forward-thinking, and committed than ever to transforming pharmacy education.

Inspired by the success of this year’s event, we are excited to announce the upcoming jubilee edition of the Pharmacy Game International Symposium, returning to Groningen in Spring 2026 with an even more ambitious and engaging program.

Mark your calendars—we look forward to welcoming you!
