Dear Friends and Colleagues

Standing in the tradition of 24 EAFP conferences and following success of them, I am very happy to welcome you to the next 25th conference entitled „Creative Education: towards professional competencies in pharmacy education”, to our University, in our charming city, main centre of knowledge and education raising the level of intellectual life in country.

Cracovia totius Poloniae urbs celebrima – this Latin maxim describes Kraków as the most famous of Polish cities and therefore I hope that you find our town in accordance with this sentence. With the population of 800 thousands, the city takes great pride in its splendid monuments such as Wawel Castle, dozens of churches, museums, several hundred cafés, restaurants, and of course the Jagiellonian University.

It is the second time that the EAFP conference will be held in Kraków. After 16 years we will be finally together in our Alma Mater, the oldest University in Poland. As the 2nd university founded in Central Europe after Prague (1348), being one of the oldest in the world. Since the 14th century Kraków has been an university town. The educational institution Alma Mater Cracoviensis currently known as Jagiellonian University was founded in 1364 by King Casimir the Great. In 1400 Alma Mater was refunded and modernized thanks to donation by Queen Jadwiga wife of King Ladislaus Jagiełło after whom the university was named Jagiellonian University.

Through the ages many distinguished alumni such as Nicolaus Copernicus, King John III Sobieski, Karol Wojtyła, later Pope Saint John Paul II, chemist Karol Olszewski, writers Stanisław Lem, Nobel laureates Wisława Szymborska, Ivo Andrić graduated the JU. Nowadays, the JU comprises 16 faculties and educates 48 000 students each year in 87 fields of studies and 146 specialities.

The Faculty of Pharmacy is among the oldest in Poland because the history of pharmacy as an academic discipline begin in 1783. Currently Faculty of Pharmacy is composed of 10 chairs, 9 departments, Postgraduate training school and offers 3 major kinds of studies: pharmacy, medical analytics, cosmetology and additionally veterinary in cooperation with different departments belong to the Medical College JU and the University Centre of Veterinary Medicine UJ-UR.
